New Green CHeek

Hi

Hi I am a new mom to Jazz, a 6 month old green cheek. I have experience with birds in the past, but new to conures. This swet boy is so precious, but he has some issues and maybe someone can help. First off, he is a bit nippy. That I know how to work with, but any suggestions are welcome.

Next, his papers say he is hand-fed. The people I got him from said that they spent time with him but when I offer him any food (I've tried apple slice, mango, grape) he acts like I'm chasing him and runs from me. If I put it in his food bowl, he ignores it. He loves his herb salad, ate it right out of the palm of my hand.

From what I can tell, I'm his third owner since he left his breeder. Any suggestions would be appreciated and welcome.

Thanks!

Update:

I laid the small mango slice in my hand and he ate it. I think maybe he's still just getting used to us. He's so precious!

Kaci

Rehomed birds are difficult at best and impossible at worst. You are doing very well. Just use a bit of patience.3 homes in 6 months is an awful lot for a baby to accept. Green cheeks are noted for being nippy. Good luck . ----yogi

Some conures prefer their food cut into small bits.  Frankie will ignore an apple slice, but will will eat diced apple.

Thanks, I think that may be his deal too. Last night when I made the mango slice smaller, he ate it up. Also broccoli, I laid a smal piece of broccoli in my hand and he didn't hesitate for one second. I tried it because the girl I got him from said that he was weined on broccoli, apples and carrots.

I've seen on several web sites and on his diet sheet that dandelions are good for them. Does that mean the ones out of the yard? And just the leaves right??

Yes the ones in the yard as long as you don't spray them.  I think the newer leaves are better, but maybe that's just a human thing.

As long as you don't put stuff like weedkiller and chemicals on them or your dogs dont pee on them, they are fine.I feed mine the leaves & dandelion flowers. I had a breeder friend that threw the whole plant in with his birds---leaves ,flowers, roots, dirt and all. His birds thrived on them.---Yogi

Him being hand fed, means that he was fed formula through a syringe. He has maybe never seen what you are feeding him, or cut at the same size of what you are offering and is a bit leery of the foreign object Smile

Marlyn my Grey was funny when she was young. She would only eat vegetables and fruits that were minced up. Also things like apples had to be pealed otherwise it was not an apple to her and she wouldnt touch it. Sweet potatoes and bananas had to be mashed, she wouldnt eat them if they were sliced. Zupreem pellets had to be soaked in water or juice, now she dunks them.

They can be so funny and have there own crazy quirks Emot15
