Garden pictures

Jazzie helped me plant flower beds last night and and then was a sweet boy and posed for Momma to take some pretty spring pictures.

RE: Garden pictures

He's just going through his first molt and his flight feathers are just growing in from the last clipping.

We have a harness and are getting used to it, but the vet here says he is safe right now. I'm not completely sure of the vet here (I am looking for an avian vet in the bigger nearby towns). Am I taking a risk taking him outside without the harness with the wings he has now?

RE: Garden pictures

Honestly, YES. At this age he can fly especially if he is spooked. If it were me, i wouldnt take the chance. I would wait until he is used to the harness.

I will, thanks so much!! And I will not take him back to that vet either. I appreciate your concern.

RE: Garden pictures

When looking for a vet, make sure that he/she is Avian Certified. Smile

RE: Garden pictures

Took him up to the groomer here, she advertises that she does wing clipping. She said she would not clip his wings while he is molting and that he can't fly because he only has two unclipped primary flight feathers on each wing.

I'm confused. Have an appointment with an Avian Vet this weekend.

RE: Garden pictures

He's semi-flighted, most likely, which means on a breezy day, if startled he could get away. I lost my Dusky Conure last year who was similarly semi-flighted.

My Jenday is a powerful flyer, and still flies quite well (across the room in the air) even with clipped wings, so with a good stiff breeze carrying her away, yes she could fly just far enough to get lost.

RE: Garden pictures

With a good breeze, two flight feathers are all they need to get into a tree or glide into the street and oncoming traffic.

Gotcha, thanks for the input. I will definately discuss all of this with the avian vet on Saturday!

RE: Garden pictures

For what it is worth, conures are pair bond birds, and so attention oriented that they are fairly easy to recall train. My sun conure is recalled, and he goes out with me all the time - I still keep him clipped so that he is semi-flighted though, just in case!
