Feral Quakers in Texas
This probably isn't anything special to some people here, but until today I've never seen any wild parrot flocks. I know there are several all over the country especially in California and New Jersey and even Chicago and Florida probably has lots...I mean what bird person hasn't read or seen The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill or heard of the New Jersey Quakers right...
Anyway I was having lunch with a friend/co-worker and we were talking pets she was asking about my birds etc... and then she asked if anyone had shown me the "green parrots" that live nearby.
I said NO! I got very excited. I'm such a bird geek...
Anyway...she drove me a few blocks away from our work place, which is in an industrial parkish area, not far from Burleson Tx. We crossed over into what is known as Everman city...small town, quiet and nice. And down this one street on several power poles there they were...Quaker nests! We even saw a few peeking out from their homes and we heard one squawking up a storm at some smaller song birds trying to steal nesting materials it looked like.
I was tickled pink! Susan said she was finally glad to show them to someone who appreciated it...most people have no clue or just don't care.
Of course when I got back to the office i immediately hopped online...not much to learn about this small flock other than that they exist and that the community in Everman enjoys their presence. They think that someone years ago released a pair of pet Quakers and that's how the flock originated. From what I read in a newspaper article the power company is as humane as they can be when dealing with the nests. They're pretty well established on several of the power poles.
There are a few small restaurants along the road so I'm going to try lunch in a few and see if I can catch more viewings of the Quakers. One of the nests is in a power line pole right in front of the police/firestation. That I thought was rather comical.
Anyway, I thought I'd share my little experience.

Yeah there are lots of Quakers in South Florida. I usually hear them before I see them. I recently heard there are some in Chicago too, but I haven't seen any here.
