Kiwi's Big Adventure
So, we had like 4 days of torrential rain in the desert here, and near freezing temps at night.
So, I have the groomer over and for Kiwi I decided (because it has noticeably given her more confidence and I am thinking she may not pick her neck feathers) to have her wings "long clipped."
So two days later I open the door, walk outside and someone bangs their garbage can and Kiwi flies downhill over FIVE houses in the rain and I lose sight of her.
So I spend the next hours begging people on three streets to allow me into their backyard to see if she landed there. All have dogs and/or cats. By now I am soaking wet and people are leery of my "lost parrot story."
So I give everyone my phone number and even mention it to two guys walking their dog in the rain.
So I post on Craigslist, call the pet store and try to put a sign at Circle K. Impossible to put a sign on telephone poles because it is torrential rain, collecting in big puddles and roads are closed.
So the next day my doorbell rings and it is three guys, one of whom is the guy walking his dog the day before.
So they tell me WE FOUND YOUR BIRD but couldnt find which house you lived in on this street!
So I go with them and there's Kiwi, center of attention with two young ladies, all wet (she had fallen in their pool and they heard her flapping).
So I sternly say KIWI! WHERE WERE YOU! and she squeaks and makes a pitiful effort to get to me with her wet wings.
So we go home.
So, she dries out, eats for about two hours, and falls asleep in my shirt.
So we bake cookies and deliver them to her saviors.
Kiwi is now clipped SHORT.

RE: Kiwi's Big Adventure
I am wondering if she isn't luckier than I thought - I think her saviours may have an alcohol problem! They came around yesterday to visit her and reeked of booze. Still, nice enough, but drunk. There was some sub-story about her walking around their garage, but I couldnt make sense of whether that was before or after the pool. I guess the story doesn't matter, what MATTERS is that she is here on my shoulder!

I've done this dance a couple of times myself. (and that's just with Tusk!)
Glad you got her back safe and sound.

Well, you did all the right things.
Unfortunately, this is one of the hazards of parrot ownership.
Scares the crap outta me everytime... but I can't just leave them locked up inside all day either. That's no quality of life... even if it is a longer one.

RE: Kiwi's Big Adventure
The worst with this one is that Kiwi is one of those birds like your Pecker - one of those very few birds who are sweet and gentle and just want to be with you every moment, and have TONS of personality to share.

Exactly!
It's like having your kid lost in the woods or something. You just go nuts with worry...
