RE: PIONUS ????
Amazon lite.
Similar coloring. Smaller. Less excitable. Less interactive in some respects. Content to hang out on your shoulder birds. I guess personality wise, you might compare them to mild mannered male eckies. (with less than eckie talking ability.)
I don't own one. I know a few people who swear by them. I know one person who has 12. They didn't show up at the rescue virtually at all.
They do tend to be perch potato-ish. Same problems as zons that way. Obesity and fatty liver can be a problem.
That's about all I know really.
I don't know if they don't show up at the rescue because they are uncommon, or because they are great birds that no one wants to get rid of, or some combination of both.

RE: PIONUS ????
I agree with all the statements about pionus. If youre looking for a quiet type , no trouble bird ,pionus will fill the bill for the most part. They will when excited give off a very strong, musky ,perfumy odor. You either love it or hate it. I am not overly fond of it and am grateful it does not happen too often. People with allergies are usually bothered by the odor. They can deliver a nasty bite if provoked.

RE: PIONUS ????
I've seen them boarded at the rescue with about a hundred other birds at Christmas, including a bunch of screaming macs, toos, and amazons. Didn't seem to phase them.
The only time it gets quiet in the jungle are when preditors are around. Quiet can be way more unnerving than noise to a parrot.
This is another one of those concepts people with neurotic pluckers fail to grasp. Some of them stress because it's just too quiet! "I'm all alone here trapped in this cage. It's too quiet. I don't see the preditor, but he's obviously out there or it wouldn't be this quiet! I'm gonna be eaten I just know it!"
Seeing happy noisy, active other birds tends to ease that kind of stress. At least based upon the research done by the world parrot trust when they came up with their "Bird TV" video concept... [Then again, they are selling videos.] http://store.wptestore.com/servlet/Detail?no=6
The research used to be posted on their website. It's not there now.

RE: PIONUS ????
Got my first Pionus yesterday night. Blue Head - don't know sex yet but whatever it is, I will need another for a playmate/cagemate/mate if anyone knows of someone wanting to sell or rehome theirs.
Can't comment much about them/him/her yet until I get a chance to devote a bunch of time to get to know him/her.

RE: PIONUS ????
Am I running a Rescue = no.
Although sometimes I do rarely buy a bird just to give it a better home than it has/had.

Do some birds I have (that have a playmate/room-mate/mate - which most do) ever choose to breed sometimes = yes.
Are you a detective. ;)

RE: PIONUS ????
We have a 10 year old re-homed Pionus. He/She is basically a one person bird. Hates all men. Loves his/her mama (me). Jo is fairly quiet and a decent talker with a few sound effects for fun. Jo does cry occassionally, but not nearly as much as many birds cry/scream/screech. It's not loud like a macaw or amazon. The little bugger does have a deadly bite and puts on an incredible I-hate-you, puffed up, evil, stalking, lunge act toward any disfavored person. My husband insists that Jo's only redeeming quality is the hysterical-toddler giggle that gets us all laughing (kinda like a little, green Tickle-Me-Elmo).

RE: PIONUS ????
I've read that they can be good for people that have been small bird owners...good bird to step up to if you wanna go larger. Mild mannered and demure from what I understand.

RE: PIONUS ????
That brings up the "starter bird" syndrome issue with me... (I hate that!)
Lots of tiels fall victim to this one.
I really want that great big un, but that one scares me, so we'll get this one and see how it goes. Cuz if it doesn't go well, it's not such an investment and I don't really care. And if it does go well, I'll get my big un, and then if things run their normal course, this one will suddenly get neglected...
Their bite is roughly the equivalent of an amazon from what I understand. If they don't like you, they certainly do mean business.
