Costa Rica's Scarlett macaw project is working. They already have 22 newly hatched wild chicks from the captive bred birds re-released into the wild.

The problem for many of these birds is still fixable. There is still hope.

There are four macs on the brink of extinction that I still fear for (including both the medium sized Bolivian macs - RFMs and BTMs - when there's no habitat left to release them into - well, this method just won't work.)

I didn't want to hijack Troy's thread so here's my question....We are going to be getting Sam's old cage ready here soon (it's already been completely bleached, disinfected and rinsed well a month or so ago, but will need another good washing once we bring it back inside.)

It is very similiar to the first pic of Troy's cage but there is a spot on the lower pull-out tray (under the bottom cage grate) where rust ate a big patch of the coating off. I was wondering if it would be OK for us to spray that with a "Rustoleum-type" paint to seal it real good?
The bird would never be walking on that part (under the grate) and we would give it lots of time to set in and the smell gone.
What do you all think??

So I let the birds out like normal today and came back upstairs to check on the kids and there homework progress. I go back down stairs and walk over to Igbo's cage and he is no where to be seen in or on it.
I start looking on the floor for him and call his name. I hear this PEEK-A-BOO very loud and very clear from Franklins cage. Igbo went off for a visit and told me Peek-A-Boo when I didnt see him to get my attention. Now thats all he is saying tonight. He keeps mumbling his name as well. but I cant figure out what he is saying.
his vocab is starting to grow and I am loving it!!!! will have to write down what he says so I can keep track. I should have started journaling them as I heard them so I had a good record. I know his first words were right after my daughters science fair project. As she used Igbo as the test subject.

Sancha came up with a new one tonight. She now meows like the cats. lol. I thought for sure it had to be another bird, but nope, it was the caique beak opening for this sound. Our cats like to catterwall (sp??) and she picked up their long drawn-out meows after 4 years. Its really cute actually.

She also says "pretty girl" and "peekaboo". Mostly though she loves to whistle. She whistles the first few notes from the part of the "Blue Danube". She does the "da da da DA DA" before it goes into the full waltz. She also enjoys making up songs with her whistling. And she, of course, makes the normal caique purring sounds and little squeaks.

Ok so after taking Igbo to the vet for his broken feather I asked her why his butt feathers are so ratty. She said he shouldnt be clumbsy anymore and his tail should look better then it does. She suggested that I rearrange his cage as he is prolly bumping it on several toys, ropes or other cage items the bars ect. . I am curious as to how those of you with short tailed birds amazon or grey size have your cages arranged. This is what Igbo's cage looks like. I did recently take out the 6' horse lead that I had ran all over the place in his cage. Any suggestions or comments would be great. Seeing your cages would be helpful also.

I think the Pens have better overall talent. But this series will be tougher than it seems. The Flyers weren't supposed to be in the mix this year, but they have a lot of depth. They match up well with the Penguins. I think it takes the Pens six games to beat them.

Red Wings vs. Stars

Turco is on fire right now, but the Wings won't turn it over the way the Sharks did, and they won't give up the odd man rushes the way the Sharks did. Red Wings in five or six.

Red Wings vs. Penguins. That oughta be an entertaining finals!

Luckily I got the old papers out (we're trying the newspaper on top of the grate thing now) before she could make it to my arm. But, I had to squeeze the new ones back in through the bars with a caique trying to attack my fingers the entire time.

Then, I was cleaning Kelsey's, senegal, cage and she got out on my shoulder like normal. Which was fine until she started pecking my ear really hard with her beak and doing the crazy wings-up-and-out breeding dance. Crazy eye flashing as I made her get back in her cage.

Now I know this is NOTHING compared to the bigger or more nasty birds, but they both caught me off-guard. Little boogers!
