[attachment=1075]

This "little" guy weighs in at over 400 g and is still so young that he doesn't know how to "step-up" and still is really uncomfortable perching (unsteady and unsure of himself).

Next week I get to work with a very rare RED African Grey (I am not sure that how I feel about these genetic mutations) and we are hoping to get the images and story into a future copy of Bird Talk.

Ok I happened to be awake just before 4am when there was a very mild quake (3.8) here in the Chicago area. I didn't KNOW it was an earthquake at the time, though I definitely noticed it. We live rather close to O'Hare & under a flight path, sometimes the planes rattle the house a bit. I thought that's what it was though it was a little different than the usual. Since I was awake I heard Oliver thrashing around in his cage. I went downstairs to check on him. He had bloodied his wing a bit, but it wasn't still bleeding & he seemed ok but a little freaked out still. I sat on the couch with him in a towel for a while to make sure he was OK. The cat was also acting a little weirder than usual. It wasn't until later in the day I found out it was an earthquake & then the animals' behavior made sense! Now Mark, don't laugh at me. I know you Californians wouldn't even be talking about this one, and if I had been asleep it wouldn't have woken me up. But it's very rare here so it's been all over the news. I do find it interesting how the animals reacted, how they're so much more in tune to certain things than we are.

Bonjour alll!
I'm thinking about finding another small sized parrot to possibly befriend my quaker. Reason being... I feel he is not getting as much attention that he would like. Now I am wondering from past experience what is the best situation; (a) Try a bigger cage first or (b) attempt to find a conure, quaker or sennie to stimulate a "flock-like" environment?
To be honest, since my 'zon came along, my little quaker has not been getting as much attention as it has been split. Add a puppy to the situation and now my quaker is starting to scream and become aggressive towards me (does not let me take him off his cage but will accept pets). Moody little bugger! I will never re-home him (just to set it straight). Just want him to be as happy as he can be!

Obviously with his territorial issues, he'd probably peck another bird to death once it came near his cage, so they would be separated (currently frequent toy change and placements done in cage). But do you think they would play on a new play stand? I'm not very sure about interactions between parrots since my zon and quaker never got along so any advice is great!

Thanks!
KristyWell, I apologize for the repeat posts.... maybe reply to this one only? The "delete" option has been disabled on my account. THX

Kiwi's Big Adventure

So, we had like 4 days of torrential rain in the desert here, and near freezing temps at night.

So, I have the groomer over and for Kiwi I decided (because it has noticeably given her more confidence and I am thinking she may not pick her neck feathers) to have her wings "long clipped."

So two days later I open the door, walk outside and someone bangs their garbage can and Kiwi flies downhill over FIVE houses in the rain and I lose sight of her.

So I spend the next hours begging people on three streets to allow me into their backyard to see if she landed there. All have dogs and/or cats. By now I am soaking wet and people are leery of my "lost parrot story."

So I give everyone my phone number and even mention it to two guys walking their dog in the rain.

So I post on Craigslist, call the pet store and try to put a sign at Circle K. Impossible to put a sign on telephone poles because it is torrential rain, collecting in big puddles and roads are closed.

So the next day my doorbell rings and it is three guys, one of whom is the guy walking his dog the day before.

So they tell me WE FOUND YOUR BIRD but couldnt find which house you lived in on this street!

So I go with them and there's Kiwi, center of attention with two young ladies, all wet (she had fallen in their pool and they heard her flapping).

So I sternly say KIWI! WHERE WERE YOU! and she squeaks and makes a pitiful effort to get to me with her wet wings.

So we go home.

So, she dries out, eats for about two hours, and falls asleep in my shirt.

So we bake cookies and deliver them to her saviors.

Kiwi is now clipped SHORT.

Who's grumpier? Female Eclectus or CAG.

Hey hey,

So the thread subject says it all..

The reason I was wondering this is simply because of me falling in love with the Eclectus (before my gorrgeous Charlie boy), expecially the females vibrant reds and purple colouring. The reason I chose Charlie was because it was a toss up between a CAG and the female Eclectus (which were both for sale in the shop I went to). From reading up on female Eclectus... (eclecti?) I found they were known to be tempramental so I went for the CAG. I wouldn't swap charlie for all the tea in China now but I realised that all of these references we're comparing the female eclectus to the male one, where he is much more placid and gentle, and not any other parrot. So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with female Eclectus and could tell me if they were more tempramental in general to parrots as a whole or just to their male counterparts?

Bird snacks and finding some friends for Charlie

Hey everyone,

Sorry it's been a while since I've posted on here.

Firstly,

SNACKS!

I've been trying to find something to reward Charlie (my CAG) with to train him to go in his cage without a fight and to try to lesson his adolesent biting. And I found some natural snacks which have been working wonders. He loves them! They're called Boredom Breacker Naturals 'Pick N Fly'. I got them from ebay so if anyone is interested in looking them up, they should be around there.

Secondly,

Friends - I've been trying to find something to help Charlie in the near future.

I am moving out of my parents house finally (Hurray!) and moving into a nice apartment with my parner. I'll be getting a new job in that area as well so the hours I usually spend with him are going to change. Initially, I asked our local guru, Birdman what he would recommend being some of the best-fitting parrots for Charlie as a companion while I'm at work. He told me that another CAG would be best as he's not bonded with any other species (as far as I know). To save my neighbours ears of CAG torture I decided it wouldn't be very responsible for me to go down that path.
As some of you might remember me mentioning in the past, I used to hatch and raise Japanese Quails. I used to get a lot of enjoyment out of this as I don't think anything can match effect of watching an egg which you've incubated for so long to break into life! With this in mind, my next project was going to be a different type of bird. I thought that having something alive for Charlie to watch bounce around in a cage would take his mind off my absence for a time. This said, I've been looking at Lady Gouldian Finches. They're very cute, not too loud and are quite an active mini bird.
Obviously I wouldn't let Charlie out of the cage at the same time as the Finches.
I was also thinking about a fish tank but I'm not certain on how much electricals bills will be at this stage so I don't want to do that yet.

Let me know what you think and what you have done in the past to keep your birds from becomming bored!

One more thing.. And this made me feel a little ill when I discovered this :emot81:

From doing more research on the internet, CAG's eat chicken! :chickdance:
I don't know if this comes as a shock to anyone else but I was amazed.. and to be honest quite grossed out. There are also videos on YouTube of it.

Wow, it's been a while since I have posted in here, and it's all due to the life altering changes that have occurred in the last 4 months ...

For those of you who may remember my daughter was born 6 weeks early and pretty tiny .... well, that was just about 4 months ago now and I figured it was about time to post some new pictures of her:

She is doing quite well ... she's almost 24 inches long and just about 12 lbs ... she's still a peanut; but, she's such a sweetheart and I think I am completely in love ... :emot143: I'm already wrapped around her fingers ....

Hamlet and Maki have adjusted to life with the new addition, and they have even taken to preening her eyelashes and eyebrows under our supervision ... so that's a really good thing ...

Hope everyone is doing well! Hope you all had great holidays ...
